Since the release of the Geforce Titan X, Nvidia has been unusually quiet- especially considering the slew of AMD announcements of new technologies like Freesync, Asynchronous Shading, and LiquidVR, its almost like they are preparing for something don’t you think?
This could mean one of two things – either Nvidia is so sure that they will dominate the market in the not to distant future, no matter what AMD is doing- or they are legitimately dont know what to respond to AMD’s new technologies and (purportedly) new hardware with.
We have not seen such a long period of time between Nvidia news for a long time- usually AMD and Nvidia are always right on the heels of each other- constantly trying to one-up each other for market share.
So what does Nvidia have up it’s sleeve?
Well, there are many possible answers to this- but a few in particular stand out.
4GB or 8GB Nvidia GTX 980 Ti?
First on the list are rumours of an Nvidia GTX 980 Ti, or similar card. This is supposedly going to be nearly identical to the Titan X in specs- but with a few key differences, there is reportedly only going to be 4 GB and 8 GB versions of the 980 Ti. This is a significant downgrade from the Titan’s 12 GB, however that being said Nvidia’s Titan X is aimed more at workstation computers, even for gaming 8 GB is the most you really will need – even at 4k.
Nvidia Delays Pascal Architecture?
Secondly, rumours have also been floating about that Nvidia’s Pascal architecture has a slated release date of 2016, we may see lower-power Pascal GPU’s surface sometime around Q3 2015. Similarly to how the 750 Ti was Maxwell architecture significantly before the 900 series came out with full-fledged Maxwell GPU’s, we may see a similar low power Pascal GPU surface well before the full release of Pascal. This could be great for MITX and SFF builds, if the to-be-named card has any similarities to the 750 Ti.
While there are many rumours flying about, there is no way to be sure of what will actually happen. Of course, there are many ways to interpret these rumours- what do you think Nvidia has planned? Be sure to leave a comment below with your opinion, we would love to hear what you think Nvidia is planning!
