Virtual realities, new phones, laptops, processors and GPUs has been the news that captured the attention of the majority these past few months and who could blame them? With new innovations to entice us, I too would be very much interested at what they are offering.
Let’s not allow the huge innovations make use forget about the other hardware that we also rely upon everyday without realizing. One of these are storage devices. Therefore, let us take a side step and discover the world of new storage devices this 1st quarter of 2015 instead.
Who knows, it might just be the one you’re looking for! With all these new storage devices at your disposal, would you grab one of the following yourself?
Mushkin ECO2 SSD
Let’s start you off with Mushkin’s new SSD. First off, it’s looking quite good at a capacity ranging from 60GB up to 480GB. Prices are surprisingly good too at a low price of $39.99 and up to $159.99 respectively. That’s like $0.33 per GB if I’m not mistaken.
Thinking what Mushkin could have done to make it cheap? To answer that question, it uses the dated SandForce controller. Also, one thing to consider is its performance ratings. While the fastest version is stated to be at 550-530MB/s range with random writes at 87k IOps, the 480GB tested out to be at 485MB/s with sequential writes and at 32k IOps with random ones. This could only mean that configuration has a flaw. Although, if you feel you’ve been cheated, there’s that 3 year warranty to consider.
Toshiba’s New 12GB SAS Enterprise HDD
Just recently, Toshiba introduced to us their new 12GB SAS interface enterprise HDD line. Labeled as AL13SX series, the 2.5” HDD runs at 15,000 RPM. It comes in different sizes at 300GB, 450GB, and 600GB. The reason of its 2.5” form factor is to allow greater density and is supposed to be more power efficient than the usual 3.5” form factor. To add, AL13SX series have an average latency of 2.0ms and also provides a faster seek performance comparing it to the 3.5” 600GB models. While it’s all looking to be a good buy, we can only hope it won’t come at an insane price. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see later this month.
SanDisk Storage Arrays At Less Than $1/GB
Finally, if you’re thinking Mushkin’s ECO2 and Toshiba’s AL13SX series don’t have enough capacity to store all your files, SanDisk’s has just the solution for you. SanDisk with its in-house designed InfiniFlash all-flash array series, you can have a storage device that could reach up as high as 512TB in 3U. Also, the storage device is said to have 8x SAS 2.0 which runs at 6GBps.
Here are the three different types of InfiniFlash:
- IF100 – An open platform designed for OEMS and hyperscale customers with their own software platforms. The IF100 also includes Software Development Kit for monitoring purposes. Price ranges at less than $1/GB
- IF500 – Designed specifically for object storage. Price ranges between $1-2/GB
- IF700 – Focused on performance with workloads in mind. Price ranges between $1-2/GB
