Chris Cox hints that the Oculus RIft can be used for Facebook’s future apps at Code/Media 2015 Tech News

If you haven’t caught up with the news, Facebook bought the Oculus VR in March 2014 for a whopping $2 billion. So what do we get with an Oculus rift and Facebook? Why, a virtual reality apps of course!

This means that our current experience with Facebook is going to be a lot more complex. We can’t say for sure if this is going to be a good experience or bad, all we can do is sit and wait until users get to experience it first-hand.

During the Q&A session at the Code/Media conference at the Ritz Carlton in Laguna Niguel, Facebook Chief Product Officer Chris Cox said he couldn’t describe to us the full detail on its apps but gave us a hint on what’s it’s going to be like:

“You realize, when you’re in it, that you’re looking at the future, and it’s going to be awesome. When you’re in Facebook, you’re just sending around these bits of experience — a photo, a video, a thought,” Cox said, whereas with VR, you could be “sending a fuller picture.”

This future app clearly dictates that photos and videos would likely have a VR option of some kind. This could also indicate that users would also have to do some task to produce a virtual reality effect on their photos and videos. It is also said that users would have to use multiple cameras to create VR content. I for one would like to know more, but unfortunately, nothing else was mentioned about it.

When Is The Facebook Virtual Reality Apps Release?

Sadly, it’s still unknown. One thing we do know is it will probably take a long time before users could have the VR headset as stated by Chris Cox. Although, it was believed that the Oculus VR is due to release sometime this year, competing with Sony’s Project Morpheus and Microsoft’s HoloLens. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

The Oculus Rift is a device that turns the world of pictures and videos into a world of virtual reality. It is believed to be usable only by Windows PC and Android systems, which means you need to buy one of either. A sad situation for Apple users but I’m guessing it’s for a good reason, on their part anyways.

Thoughts

To be honest, I am not that excited knowing that the virtual reality will be available Facebook apps soon. It’s not that I don’t like the idea, but simply just wanting it more on my games instead of my Facebook apps.
