[INFOGRAPHIC] Facts about Intel vs AMD

Everyone always debates about performance between AMD and Intel processors but does anyone go off and search for any background information about these major pc component brands?

AMD vs Intel: The Facts

AMD had a brief period of success around 10 years ago with their Athlon XP and Athlon64 processors. Both were innovations in not on the gaming world but overclocking too. However, that was short-lived and Intel have bounced back and stormed ahead in growth.

AMD reported a net loss of $74 million in the second quarter of 2013 but that soon changed with the adoption of their GPUs in next-generation gaming consoles and turned a healthy $5.3 Billion compared to Intel at $11.5 Billion.

Here is a short infographic detailing some AMD vs Intel facts, from Intel’s total employee count vs AMD and even their total consumer market share.

While clock speed alone does not mean they necessarily mean Intel’s processors are faster in all applications ( just look at AMD with their 1st generation 64bit CPUs, nothing could touch them in hardcore pc games.) It’s clear that Intel is currently the king (or queen?) of pc processors with seven times as many employees as AMD and over 100% more revenue.

It’s only logical that with that much extra revenue and widespread deployment by computer manufacturers including Apple, that Intel will nearly indefinitely pull ahead in the technology race.

Where does this leave AMD?

AMD showed real promise with their Athlon64 and Opteron range of desktop processors. I owned various models of both chips and they overclocked and performed flawlessly. Unfortunately, Pentium 4s even with hyperthreading enabled just could not keep up. Still, then Intel released Core2duo, and things have never been the same, but I think 2014 will see a better year for AMD, with Playstation 4 and Xbox One both having their feet firmly on the ground and their new line of ‘steamroller’ CPUs released, we should hear some good things out of AMD in 2014.
